Correct me if i am wrong there. Seems most logical that Bane and his apprentice were caught, interrogated and executed. That the Jedi discovered the Rule of Two during this interrogation and in executing two Sith believed the Order dead.
A second apprentice lived on in the shadows and the Jedi passed down the knoledge of the rule of two as a history lesson to future Jedi. Especially leading members like Yoda. Sith history would definitely have been taught by the Jedi order at the very least to the masters as a lesson of the dangers of the dark side. Darthluukaz I completely agree in the fact that the sith tricked the Jedi into believing that they killed the last sith when really the sith kept a low profile to build up forces and allies to fight the Jedi.
I also have the idea of the force creating a sith to try to bring balance to the force like Aniken Skywalker was as said in the Prophecy for Aniken skywalker to bring balance to the force as the chosen one.
